Our History in New Zealand

Our site in East Tamaki has a long and proud history as a food manufacturing facility.

It was built in a rural location just outside of Auckland in the 1970s by the Dairy Board and a group of NZ Dairy Co-operatives. The factory reprocessed butter for export to the Middle East, as well as domestic and export margarine production.

Over time, the East Tamaki site as well as the city of Auckland have grown. The factory is now considered part of Auckland’s south-eastern suburbs, in the area previously known as Manukau City, which merged to become part of the new super-city of Auckland in 2010.

The factory received significant upgrades throughout the 1990s including the installation of a retail spreads plant, a batch plant and a complete overhaul of the refinery.

GrainCorp purchased the factory in 2012 and further expanded its capability in 2016 to include a continuous neutralisation plant, allowing the site to import crude soft oils.
